What's the Matter with You or Six Months in a Leaky Boat

Nearly a month since my last post. Life tends to get in the way of living sometimes.

In the last month....

I've become slightly more active on Facebook.
I've joined a casual raiding guild (time consuming).
I've facilitated the launch of a new intranet at work.

So let's take these one at a time.

Facebook. I've never been a social creature. It's just not in me. I've connected with some old friends lately and I can't even say that I'd call them friends. Acquaintances would be more appropriate. One of them dropped me a note about a previous post I made concerning the election of Obama ...

After discussing the election with several black friends (who are on both sides of the proverbial "aisle", ideologically speaking) it's pretty obvious that MANY MANY blacks turned out to vote for Obama. They, as a voting block, turned out for this election much more than in previous election cycles. And most will admit that they voted for Obama because of his race. That, by definition, is racism. You and I both know that if I publicly said that I voted for McCain b/c he's white, I would be labeled as a racist- and rightfully so. Race is no reason to vote for- or against- anyone. But if you vote for one candidate simply b/c he is one color, you are voting against the other candidate b/c he's not the right color.

And yes .. he is right. Had the black vote not gone for Obama as heavily as it did he wouldn't have won. He also wouldn't have won without the white vote. And this is what makes the difference. He will be judged on his actions more than the color of his skin.

There is still a large amount of racism and I don't see that going away anytime soon. I do believe that there are those of us who grew up facing examples of racism no matter how subtle. For each of us, those examples determined where we fall on the spectrum.

And yes, if you or I were to say that we voted for a candidate because of the color of his or her skin we would be considered racist. I can only hope that I can set an example for my children and those around me that helps them to realize the that we are all human. The color of our skin, our political opinions, our religious beliefs don't matter because we are all human.

Warcraft and raiding. A few months back I left the guild that I had been a part of for more than a year. The guild leader and I had a fundamental difference of opinion and I was no longer enjoying the game. When I left, several others also chose to leave and this resulted in the formation of a new guild based on those players. I ended up leaving that guild to further pursue development of my main character by trying new things including raiding. Thus far, it has been a very good experience.

Work. For the last 6 months or so I've been working on a developing a new intranet presence for my employer. The existing system had been in place for close to 5 years and was showing it's age. The switch was flipped a couple weeks ago and I've been waiting for the other shoe to drop since then. Thus far, there have been no major issues. I'm still holding my breath.
