Social Media and your Social Profile

Random thought : What does your Social Profile say about you and just how accurate is it?

This popped into my head Saturday and as I waited for Star Trek to start it kept rolling around the inside of my brain.  And the more I thought about it the more I felt the need to flush out what this random thought really means.

I define a social profile as the perceived reality of who you are based on your digital actions.  This means everything you post using a chosen monicker or in some cases multiple monickers.  I've had many over the years.  For the last four or five years it's been darthclue, prior to that it was headachesabound, and before that it was something else entirely.

As I thought about this whole social profile thing I began to reflect on recent events in which portions of a social profile where taken out of context and used to develop a perceived reality that could fit an agenda.  And the more I thought about this the more I thought about what a social profile really says about someone.

For instance, most people who know me perceive me as a reserved person who makes attempts to avoid human contact and is generally non-sociable.  Which is somewhat true but not really.  My social profile generates a completely different perception.  I'm perceived as a well-spoken outgoing leader ready and willing to take charge whenever the time calls for it.  The truth is that I am somewhere in the middle.

Words permit me to be something I cannot be in person.  I can think about words.  I can edit them to generate the response that I desire.  I can ensure, for the most part, that they are understood and not mis-interpreted.  Doing so in person annoys most people as it requries thought and concentration.  I am wired for logic first and emotion second which can be difficult to relate to.

So what does your social profile say about you?  How accurate is it?  Does your social profile impact your interactions with others?  Mine does and more.
