Educational Standards or A Failure of the System
Public Schools are an interesting institution. They provide an education for every child.
But they have become legislative nightmares. Education professionals, both teachers and administrators, are continuously required to implement ever-increasing standards which provide little to no value to the customer who is in this case, both the child and the community at large.
I personally have had a variety of educational opportunies in both public and private schools.
Recent events have made it ever more clear that the public school system is not where my children belong if I wish to see them thrive. I've been having this conversation with my wife for some time concerning my desire to provide for their education at home. Her main concern is that she has a learning disabilty, most likely dislexia, which causes her grief in trying to explain and understand the current work that our children are expcted to complete.
After several long discussions this weekend we have made the decision to home school our children. We are just beginning on this journey and while I have my own reservations I can see the benefits of being able to provide them with the proper education that they deserve.
We have a few contacts locally who have expressed willingness to help and have begun looking at a variety of resources online as well. If any of you have suggestions please feel free to share them.
Keep in mind that I'm not saying the public school system is a failure. I think the teachers and administrators have done the best they can with the resources they have been given And therein lies the problem. They have not been given the resources they need to handle the educational needs of children with disabilities.
My standards and expectations are just higher than what the system will provide.
